Framing produces and is reproduced in the tension between what is placed within it and what is left outside its borders. All framings demand a perspective; they hinge on a selection process that articulates narratives, but what forms of knowledge support or challenge this process? Be it images on a canvas, words on a page, or chemical reactions on a surface, how does the idea of the frame allow us to approach the cultural production of Hispanic, Lusophone and Caribbean realities in a global context?

This year’s conference invites proposals that pay attention to the frames that inevitably structure cultural productions, as well as the mechanisms of power that configure the grounds of possibility and the sociopolitical realities we live in. The conference aspires to be a space for discussing those frames that have operated throughout the histories of the regions and the ways culture has reinforced them, criticized them or transformed them.

Proposals written in Spanish, Portuguese or English may be sent to hispanicstudiesgs@sas.upenn.edu until January 10, 2023, and should include a title and an abstract (max. 250 words), along with your contact information and academic affiliation.
