Graduate Writing Fellowships

The CAS Writing Program is soliciting applications from GRS doctoral students interested in being considered for one of approximately 10-12 Graduate Writing Fellowships available beginning Fall 2023. (The number of new awards varies slightly with the number of continuing fellows.) I would be grateful if you could bring these awards to the attention of your best students by disseminating the attached application guidelines. Applications are due Monday, October 24.

Graduate Writing Fellowships provide GRS doctoral students with an opportunity to receive valuable training and teaching experience while serving as instructors in the CAS Writing Program. The Writing Program offers upwards of 400 undergraduate writing seminars each year, making it the largest instructional unit in the College of Arts & Sciences.

Graduate Writing Fellows teach one course (WR 120 or WR 150/151/152) per semester and receive a per-semester stipend of at least $12,751 per semester (the rate in 2022-23), basic health insurance coverage, and continuing student fees. Awards are technically made on a semester-by-semester basis, but fellows can generally expect renewal for up to three additional consecutive semesters. These fellowships are highly competitive and are reserved for doctoral students only, with strong preference given to students from GRS departments. Please note that students cannot hold the fellowship beyond their seventh year of graduate study.

The Writing Program is hosting an information session for prospective applicants on Friday, October 7th from 3-4 p.m. via Zoom. I have attached for distribution an information sheet outlining the terms of the fellowship and the application procedure.  This information can also be found at https://www.bu.edu/writingprogram/about/fellowships-and-employment/graduate-writing-fellowships/ .

I look forward to receiving your students’ applications.  If you would like to talk further about this award, please do not hesitate to contact me at smhardy@bu.edu<mailto:smhardy@bu.edu> or 358-1504.

Sincerely yours,

Sarah Madsen Hardy
