Savo Publishes Article
Anita Savo, Assistant Professor of Spanish, recently published an article titled, “It’s a Man’s World: Women and Movement in Juan Manuel’s Works,” in Bulletin of Spanish Studies. In the piece, Savo studies representations of women’s travel in two medieval prose genres: exemplary literature and historiography. While Juan Manuel’s exemplary literature paints a more conservative picture of women limited to the domestic sphere, his historical writings describe women who travel to transform themselves, assert their agency, and wield power over others. Among other things, Savo’s article shows how Juan Manuel’s Libro de las tres razones, a work with elements of historiography, transforms the historical travels of Violante of Aragon (queen consort of Alfonso X of Castile) into a thrilling story of disguise, machinations, and murder.
