Romance Studies Holds Virtual Celebration!

Covid-19 has put a hold on BU’s official in-person commencement ceremonies – but we at Romance Studies didn’t let that stop us from celebrating our graduates! On Friday, May 15, the Romance Studies community gathered to congratulate our bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral graduates, as well as our undergraduate award winners.

Speaking at the event, Romance Studies chair Odile Cazenave noted the unusual circumstances of the past semester, but said that regardless of whether we gather in-person or virtually, “What brings us together today is a shared excitement about the study of of languages, literatures, cinemas, and cultures that are not necessarily our own.”

Ao Shen, the CAS College Prize winner for Romance Studies spoke as well. Shen talked about language learning as a bridge between cultures, saying that “language learning is an act of empathy.” She also noted that “majoring in French has led me to unexpected places,” including studying abroad in France.

Congratulations and best wishes to our 2020 graduates! We are very proud of all of you.
