Silva Santiesteban Elected to Peruvian Congress

Photo of Rocio Silva SantiestebanBU alumna Rocio Silva Santiesteban has won election to the Peruvian Congress, representing the capital city of Lima. Silva Santiesteban ran as a candidate of the Frente Amplio (Broad Front), a left-wing coalition. The Frente Amplio received 6% of the vote, giving it nine seats in the new congress.

Silva Santiesteban received her PhD in Hispanic Language & Literature from BU in 2006. She is a noted Peruvian poet and human rights activist, having served as the Executive Secretary of the Coordinadora Nacioinal de Derechos (National Human Rights Coordinator). She has also worked as a journalist and as a university professor at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Peru.
