Maurer Speaks at García Lorca / Lou Reed Event
On November 20, Christopher Maurer helped celebrate the 30th anniversary of Lou Reed’s album New York and the 90th of Federico García Lorca’s Poet in New York at the New York Public Library, with writer Jonathan Cott, poets Monica de la Torre and Anne Waldman, and performers Laurie Anderson, Thurston Moore, and Don Fleming.
Thirty years ago (in 1989), Lou Reed released his iconic album New York, partly inspired by Federico García Lorca’s Poet In New York, which the Spanish poet began writing sixty years earlier. To mark the overlapping anniversaries, the New York Public Library hosted an event to explore the connections between the two poets, featuring readings and discussion as well as music recordings, videos, and photographs from the Lou Reed Archive.
