Laurie Garriga Researches in Puerto Rican Archives

Laurie Garriga travelled this summer to Puerto Rico, with sponsorship from a GRS Graduate Research Abroad Fellowship, to conduct research at the University of Puerto Rico. Laurie is a doctoral student in our Hispanic Language & Literatures program.

Laurie tells us:

I conducted research at the University of Puerto Rico, mainly at Juan Ramón Jiménez’s archive (Sala Zenobia- Juan Ramón), Federico de Onís’s Seminar (Humanities Faculty) and the Central Archive of the University. My work during the summer focused on tracing and reviewing the establishment of archival institutions in Puerto Rico.

I centered my research around the relationship between the two authors (Onís and Jiménez) and their role in the reshaping of transatlantic Hispanism through the inclusion of the island  of Puerto Rico and its University as a hub of a more inclusive Hispanic community.
