This student production of In the Time of the Butterflies is based on a novel by Julia Alvarez adapted by Caridad Svich for the stage. The play is based on the real story of the four Mirabal sisters who grew up in the Dominican Republic during the dictatorial regime of Rafael Trujillo. The play takes place throughout 30 years (1930-1960), focusing on how a whole generation grew up under Trujillo’s regime and how Dominicans began to see his political persona of a ‘God Almighty’ to a ruthless tyrant. The sisters decided to create a secret movement to overthrow his regime. Because of this three of the four sisters are assassinated by Trujillo’s men. Dede, the only sister that survived, promised to keep her sisters’ story alive and held true to her promise from the time her sisters died in 1960 until her death in 2014.
