Individual Placement and Support (IPS) is the gold-standard evidence-based practice helping people diagnosed with serious mental illness find and keep personally meaningful jobs. Developed over three decades ago and increasingly in use today throughout the United States and indeed around the world, IPS has a very strong research base and impressive success in real-world settings.
The purpose of this piece is to take a look at potential advocacy activities to help overcome the frustrating barriers that can impede both the staff helpers and their administrators from providing evidence-based services leading to better employment outcomes. Clarity about what goes into the bureaucratic “sausage” may offer paths for advocacy, both at the local program level and at the state departments level.
Searching for employment opportunities has never been an easy road for anyone. But for those individuals who are older and have a history of managing a psychiatric disability, there are even more challenges. These job seekers face the “Double jeopardy” effect. Older adults (40+) with disabilities face compounding discrimination—due to both age and disability—creating greater obstacles in hiring and workplace treatment.
No one grows up dreaming of being poor or permanently dependent on public benefits. Yet, for too many people with psychiatric disabilities, that becomes their reality – not because of a lack of ability or ambition, but because the system designed to support them often makes it harder for them to break free. This article is about changing that story – about helping people from patient to paycheck, from being defined by a diagnosis to being empowered by purpose.
We have four active grant-funded projects that study ways to improve employment placement, support, and outcomes for individuals with serious mental health conditions, as well as provide online resources, training, and technical assistance to mental health organizations.
