Launching “You Are Why”

Dear Boston University Community Members,

Higher education faces immense challenges, from rapidly changing technology and shrinking research budgets to decreased public trust. These hurdles are not just obstacles for universities; they affect the communities we exist to serve. They call on us to adapt to better address a changing world.

Today, I am pleased to share that we are launching “You Are Why,” an ambitious effort to show how our work impacts people here in Boston, across the country, and around the world.

We’re calling this initiative “You Are Why” because, fundamentally, the work we do at Boston University is about improving people’s lives. This effort will highlight our groundbreaking research and discoveries that have been made possible through federal and philanthropic partnership and investment. The primary partnership with federal agencies remains vital to our work, to our country, and to future generations. “You Are Why” will also share examples of how our scholarship, teaching, and service missions impact the lives of our patients, students, families, and communities.

We must also find new partners. “You Are Why” calls on us to seek new ways of engaging in dynamic and innovative partnerships. These partnerships will help us support and shape the future of research and, above all, provide opportunity for our students, who will become leaders, scientists, artists, thinkers, and citizens. At Boston University, we excel at crossing disciplinary boundaries in research, but now we must cross institutional boundaries and team up with industry, foundations, alumni, nonprofits, and others to find mutual ways to serve a greater good.

The “You Are Why” initiative will:

  • Raise funds for faculty research, graduate student fellowships, and undergraduate research opportunities
  • Engage stakeholders and new public and private partners in innovative ways
  • Share stories of impact to demonstrate the value of higher education, research, and scholarship
  • Encourage interdisciplinary collaboration among our faculty, students, staff, and alumni

I am inspired by the passion and collaboration already underway at Boston University, from faculty-driven convergent research efforts to students’ community-based projects. With “You Are Why,” we look forward to honoring that spirit and building on it with new partners and greater impact.

In a world that often feels fragmented, Boston University remains steadfast in the belief that we are stronger together. Our work is shaped by the needs and hopes of those we serve—and guided by the conviction that education and discovery should benefit society.

There is a lot to do. I hope each of you commits to this effort by sharing your stories about the importance of scientific research and training the next generation of scientists and health professionals. I am optimistic about what we can accomplish because, at Boston University, we are known for our ability to adapt and to get things done. Above all, Terriers care about people.

We want people from all walks of life to know why we show up every day and why we respond in challenging times.

It is a privilege to serve this community and to build the partnerships that will make a difference—today, and in the days, months, and years to come. Thank you for your enduring commitment to one another and to those we serve.

Sincerely,

Melissa Gilliam
President
