Committed to Our International Students and Scholars
Dear Members of the Boston University Community,
Late last week, we learned that the US Department of Homeland Security finalized a new rule that establishes a set period of stay for certain visa holders, including international students and scholars. The rule eliminates the “duration of status” system that allowed many international students to remain in the United States in lawful status as long as they were studying in an academic program and working toward completion of their program. Instead, it enacts a fixed period of stay and a procedure for visa holders to apply for an extension of stay. The rule will take effect on September 15, 2026.
This change to a long-standing policy creates questions, concerns, and unease within our community. Our colleagues in the International Students & Scholars Office (ISSO) have been carefully studying the new rule to fully understand its impact here at Boston University. Some of that information has already been posted on the ISSO website.
In the coming days and weeks, we will share more information in BU Today, and ISSO and the Office of the General Counsel will host a series of town hall meetings to explain what this change means and answer questions. We urge international students to be in touch with your assigned ISSO advisor and academic advisor to understand how the new rule will impact your individual status.
We also encourage international students and scholars to use the many supports and resources available at Boston University, including those housed within BU Support Pathways. In addition, ISSO will continue to update its website with new information to help guide your understanding and decision-making related to federal rule changes, including this one.
As leaders of this institution, we stand by the belief that our different backgrounds and perspectives make us a stronger university. When this rule was under consideration last year, we joined colleges and universities across the country in writing to oppose it.
Since its founding, Boston University has placed a particular value on being a global institution, attracting people from around the world. This commitment is key to who we are today. International students, faculty, and staff, you are vital members of our community and bring so much to it.
