Graduate Student

Guillermo entered the Political Science Ph.D. program at Boston University (BU) in the spring of 2025 after earning a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Divinity from The University of Chicago Divinity School (2022-2024), a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from The University of Chicago Law School (2012-2013), and a J.D. from Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (2001-2007).

During his time at BU, he plans to study “Latino Christian Nationalism,” focusing on (i) the ways in which Latin American and US Latino evangelicals are engaging with Christian Nationalism (CN) rhetoric on the ground, (ii) any distinctions in how they engage with CN rhetoric that may be connected to race/skin color, socio-economic class, country of origin, city of residence, and/or Protestant denomination, and (iii) the similarities and differences in CN rhetoric’s engagement among Latin American evangelicals, US Latino evangelicals, and US white evangelicals, as the latter group has been the primary focus of existing US scholarship.

Prior to joining the Ph.D. program, Guillermo was an independent researcher, attorney, and politician in Latin America. Guillermo’s prior research focused on the intersection of game theory and the law (studying how individuals interpreted inconsistencies between “populist” laws and non-populist laws, and how such interpretation affected their decision to comply with both) and the intersection of religion and politics (studying why Latin American politicians employed US religious rhetoric like CN in their local campaigns, and how they adapted it to Latin American reality). He was a partner (now of counsel) at the banking and finance practice of Peru’s largest law firm, advising People’s Republic of China (PRC) state-owned companies in acquisitions of strategic assets located in Peru, US investment banks in private offerings of financial instruments to Peruvian banks and pension funds, and Latin American banks in lending transactions to Peruvian companies. As a member of Partido Morado, a Peruvian political party, he served as the party’s candidate for Mayor of the City of Lima in the 2022 Peruvian regional elections and currently holds a leadership position in the party’s executive board.
