Ph.D. Candidate

Aryssa received her B.A. in political science and sociology from Beloit College in May 2021. She is entering the Ph.D. program in fall 2021, focusing on American Politics. Aryssa’s research interests include racial and ethnic politics, public policy, the War on Drugs, presidential rhetoric, policing, and how it all connects to the issue of mass incarceration. Aryssa has completed work for the Beloit, Wisconsin Police Department, analyzing their disorderly conduct arrests to identify if officers had racial bias and if said bias then impacted their use of discretion. Aryssa has also conducted research examining the effects of presidential rhetoric and the effects of drug mandatory minimums on the incarceration of Black men. Aryssa is a Ralph Bunche Institute Alumna, Ronald E. McNair Scholar, and a 2021-2022 APSA Diversity Fellow. In addition to pursuing her Ph.D., Aryssa will also be pursuing a law degree from BU in a dual degree program.
