Ph.D. Candidate; Job Candidate

Gizem received her Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and Sociology from Koç University, Turkey. At Koç University, her research focused on International Political Economy and European Studies. She received her Master of Arts in International Affairs from Northeastern University, where she focused on International Public Policy and European Union studies. At Northeastern University, Gizem worked as a research assistant on a grant-funded project related to immigration, for which she transcribed and analyzed data collected via interviews. During her Ph.D. studies at Boston University, Gizem took her field exams in Comparative Politics and Quantitative Methods. She was a teaching fellow for Quantitative Methods I and Data Science for Politics classes, for which she received the Outstanding Teaching Fellow award in the 2020-2021 Academic Year. She co-instructed the European Politics class in the 2021-2022 academic year. During the Summer 2024 semester, she taught Introduction to Comparative Politics class. Gizem is interested in European Union politics, populism, nationalism, gender politics, and quantitative methods. Her current research analyzes the European Union’s response to the democratic challenges coming from member states such as Poland and Hungary. She was a visiting researcher at the University of Warsaw in Poland from February 2023 to July 2023, where she completed her fieldwork. Her most recent work was published in Nationalities Papers.
