Using physics to understand living systems, complex networks, and the organization of matter across scales.

Our research applies the ideas and methods of physics to systems made up of many interacting parts. Faculty and students study questions ranging from the behavior of biological molecules and cells to collective phenomena, networks, and complex systems:

  • Biological Physics: Using experimental, theoretical, and computational approaches to understand biological systems across molecular, cellular, and larger scales.
  • Statistical Physics: Studying how interactions among many individual components give rise to collective behavior, complex organization, and emergent phenomena.
