THE
INVESTIGATION
COUNSEL FOR
THE DEFENSE: When you saw
that you were left quite alone
every form of military assistance denied you
how were you able to sustain
your will to resist
3RD WITNESS: Considering our situation
it was resistance enough
just to keep alert
COUNSEL FOR
and never give up the thought
that someday there would come a time
when we could speak out
and tell what we had seen
and lived through
THE DEFENSE: How did you
PROSECUTING
ATTORNEY:
justify what you had to do
with the oath you had taken as a doctor
We object to this question
which the defense has raised
solely to blur the distinction between
witness and accused
The accused killed of their own free choice
The witness was forced
to be present at the killings
3RD WITNESS: I would like to reply to the question
Those prisoners who
by their privileged position in the camp
managed to postpone their own death
had at least to some degree
defied their masters
In order to maintain the possibility of survival
they were forced
to give the appearance of cooperating
I saw that demonstrated very clearly
in the infirmary
I
soon became bound to the staff doctors
not only because of our professional relationship
