and so I reminded him of his youth
and he said
After the war we'll meet there again
for a glass of wine
PETER WEISS
Dr Mengele sent flowers to a pregnant woman
and the wife of the camp commander
sent her best regards
and a baby sweater she had knitted herself
to the children's barrack
where somebody had thought
it would be a nice idea
to paint dwarfs on the walls
and set up a sandbox
The paths to the crematoriums
were carefully raked after each batch
of prisoners had gone by
The bushes along the way were trimmed
and flower beds had been planted
in the grass that grew
over the underground chambers
Mengele used to arrive smartly dressed
his
thumbs stuck in
his
belt
He would nod pleasantly to the children
who called him Uncle
before they were cut up in his laboratory
But there was another man I remember
His name was Flacke
Nobody starved to death in his ward
and the prisoners there all wore
clean clothes
I asked him once
Sir who are you doing this for
Someday
we will all have to he done away with
because not a single witness
can be left behind
He said
there will be enough of us here
who will find a way to prevent that
