THE INVESTI'GATION
had had a bad night just once
then she would be done for
from one minute to the next
And she had already been through everything
she had seen her relatives shot down
she had been forced to watch
as they murdered her children
she had grown completely numb
like the rest of us
She knew
that once she went under
nobody would help her
and whoever took over
would go on beating
so she beat us
because she wanted
to stay on top at any price
5TH WITNESS:
The question
of right and wrong
didn't exist any longer
The only thing that counted
was what was immediately useful
Only our masters could afford
to have moods
and even to show how moved they were
or to be sympathetic
and make plans for the future
The camp doctor Dr Rohde
let me work in his ward
He found out
we had gone to school in the same city
and asked me
if we hadn't perhaps met each other
at the Ritter
where he frequently stopped in
for a glass of wine
and I thought
Fine if that's the way you want it
I'll go along with you
