THE INVESTIGATION
COUNSEL FOR
THE DEFENSE: Yet weren't you also required
to select patients to be killed
3RD WITNESS: There was nothing
I
could do
about changing the required quota
COUNSEL FOR
That was set by the camp administration
Still
it was possible
to alter the lists
THE DEFENSE: When it came to choosing
between one patient and another
what determined your choice
3RD WITNESS: We had to weigh
COUNSEL FOR
which of the two was more likely
to survive
his
illness
Then there was the far
more difficult question
which of the two would be useful
to the internal affairs of the prisoners
THE DEFENSE: Were some especially preferred
3RD WITNESS: Politically active prisoners
COUNSEL FOR
naturally stuck together
supported and helped each other
as much as they could
Since
I
belonged to the resistance movement
within the camp
I
of course did all
I
could
to keep others in the movement alive
THE DEFENSE: What could the resistance movement
accomplish in the camp
3RD WITNESS: The chief aim of the resistance
was to keep alive our sense of solidarity
Furthermore we documented
everything that went on in the camp
and buried our evidence
in tin cans
