JUDGE:
Who threw the caps
whose caps
and who did the shooting
2ND WITNESS: That
I
don't know
JUDGE:
What were you told then
2ND WITNESS: Yes
Well
A prisoner was ordered
to take off his cap
and throw it away
and then
Move
run and get your cap they'd say
and when he started to run
they'd shoot him down
JUDGE:
And if he didn't run
2ND WITNESS: Then they'd shoot him too
PETER
WEISS
because that was refusal to obey an order
PROSECUTING
ATTORNEY:
Were special rations
or special leaves granted
as a reward for
shooting prisoners attempting escape
2ND WITNESS:
I
never heard of that happening
I
don't believe it either
PROSECUTING
ATTORNEY:
To be rewarded for such behavior
would degrade a soldier's reputation
The court has in its possession
documents which show
that in a number of instances
sentries were rewarded for
shooting prisoners attempting escape
Furthermore lists of prisoners
shot while attempting escape
were posted and periodically
brought up to date
2ND WITNESS: That's news to me
