Prof. Adil Najam, Director of the Boston University Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future, spoke – along with Dr. Tariq Banuri, Director of the UN Department of Sustainable Development – at a special seminar at the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI), Islamabad, Pakistan, on October 23, 2010. The seminar titled “The Future of Sustainable Development in Pakistan: A Conversation with Dr. Tariq Banuri and Dr. Adil Najam” also served as the opening of the new offices of SDPI and attracted a packed room audience of development scholars and practitioners in Pakistan.

Both speakers looked at the evolution of sustainable development institutions, specially in civil society, in Pakistan and then discussed the future prospects of these institutions and of the concept. They contextualized their remarks within the emerging global challenges and realities, particularly those related to development within the UN system.
