Mark Klempner, MD, has expressed his strong desire to return to research and to assume the roles of physician-scientist and Clinical Research Core director at the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories (NEIDL) and therefore, will step down as Director of the NEIDL effective September 1, 2011. Since 2003, Mark has served as the director and led the successful proposal to build the NEIDL. As a physician-scientist he has more than 30 years of infectious disease related laboratory and clinical research experience. Mark will continue to contribute to the future success of the NEIDL through laboratory-based translational and clinical research in the NEIDL.
Jack Murphy, PhD, who along with Mark was instrumental in establishing the NEIDL, and who has served as associate director of the NEIDL since its founding, has agreed to serve as the director ad interim. In addition to his work at the NEIDL, Jack serves as professor in the Section of Infectious Diseases and professor of Microbiology at BUSM. He has more than 30 years of laboratory experience working on the molecular basis of pathogenesis, including field research in India and Bangladesh, as well as extensive experience working under Biosafety Levels 3 and 4 containment.
