Boston University Medical Center received regulatory approval

National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories

February 22, 2006

On February 2, 2006, Boston University Medical Center received regulatory approval from the federal government to fund construction of a biosafety laboratory on its medical campus in Boston. The laboratory, officially named the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories, will work to develop diagnostic tests, drugs, vaccines and treatments for emerging and reemerging infectious diseases.

The Record of Decision from the National Institutes of Health was issued after an extensive process that involved public meetings and reviews by federal agencies. Over the past two years, BUMC also received state and local approvals following extensive reviews by many regulatory agencies and BUMC participation in over 200 community meetings.
