Event Highlights: Development, Democracy, and Brazil’s Belo Monte Dam

This lecture by Peter Taylor Klein, Associate Professor of Sociology and Environmental and Urban Studies and Chair of the Environmental and Urban Studies Program at Bard College, took place on Tuesday, March 28, 2023. Klein’s research focuses on public participation, urban and environmental change, and collective action in Amazonia and Rio de Janeiro. The subject of his lecture at the Center for Latin American Studies was his recent book project, Flooded: Development, Democracy, and Brazil’s Belo Monte Dam (Rutgers University Press, 2022), an ethnographic account of the societal effects of the state’s attempt to mitigate the negative impacts of one of the world’s largest hydroelectric facilities with extensive social and economic resources.
