Authoritarian Police in Democracy: Contested Security in Latin America (04.14.22)
Join us on Thursday, April 14, 2022 at 3:30 PM for a book talk by Yanilda María González, Assistant Professor of Public Policy, Harvard Kennedy School. The subject of conversation will be Authoritarian Police in Democracy: Contested Security in Latin America, which was published in November 2020 by Cambridge University Press.
Drawing on rich comparisons and evidence from Brazil, Argentina, and Colombia, Yanilda María González’s book reveals that authoritarian policing persists not in spite of democracy but in part because of democratic processes and public demand. When societal preferences over the distribution of security and coercion are fragmented along existing social cleavages, politicians possess few incentives to enact reform.
The conversation will be moderated by Ana Villarreal, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Boston University.
Location: Center for Life Sciences & Engineering, Boston University, 610 Commonwealth Avenue
