NO ES HORA DE CALLAR / IT IS NOT TIME TO BE SILENT (12.13.21)
Please join us on MONDAY, DECEMBER 13, at 5 PM for a lecture by Laureate Colombian journalist Jineth Bedoya (Unesco World Press Freedom Prize 2020). Bedoya has been a critical voice in the search for justice for women victims of sexual violence in conflict in Colombia and worldwide.
The Inter-American Court of Human Rights recently ruled in Bedoya’s favor and held the Colombian State responsible for the threats, kidnapping, torture, and sexual violence to which she was subjected on May 25, 2000, in retaliation for her journalistic work, as well as the generalized impunity in the case. The Court ordered reparation measures that benefit women victims of violence, such as the establishment of the first site of conscience in the world devoted to women victims of violence in the conflict, particularly journalists.
Jineth Bedoya’s tireless fight for justice for more than two decades has led the highest human rights Tribunal in the hemisphere to issue an historic decision that establishes a series of non-repetition measures that are essential in the fight towards violence against women and journalists and will encourage progress in putting an end to impunity for these crimes all over the country.
