Benjamín Juárez Named Professor of Fine Arts Emeritus.

Harvey Young, Dean of the College of Fine Arts, announced during the last Faculty Meeting, on May 6, that Benjamín Juárez had been granted the title of Professor of Fine Arts Emeritus. Dean Young mentioned that after serving as Dean of CFA for five years, Benjamín’s faculty position was not exclusive to any single school, but to the College at large, given his interactions with all three Schools, Music, Theater and Visual Arts and Design.

Dean Young mentioned several contributions to Benjamín’s legacy at BU, most notably, the creation of the Arts Lab that brings programs to the Boston Medical Center and the School of Medicines, and the founding of the Arts Leadership Minor and his teaching of the Arts Leaders Forum, allowing students to become agents of change in the art world, and which has received many remarkable guests in all artistic disciplines from around the globe. Finally, Dean Young mentioned the strategic planning efforts of Benjamín Juárez during his time as Dean and the conversations that led to the creation of the area of the “Citizen artist,” a phrase that he uses widely to portray the social awareness and commitment of our students. “Benjamín’s time at BU has been impactful and deserves recognition,” he concluded, expressing his hope that as Emeritus, Benjamín will continue his contributions to the College and the University.

A member of CLAS, Benjamín has also taught our two signature courses, IR 410 and IT 713, has read several on many MA thesis defenses on different subjects, and enhanced the visit of many faculty and notable personalities from Mexico, including Néstor García Canclini and Ambassador Martha Bárcena Coqui, among others. Benjamín Juárez remains the director of the Center for Mexican Studies of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, a key partner in many activities, conferences, and colloquia, particularly with our Center and the Center for African Studies. Benjamín has been a member of our Executive Committee and his participation has been invaluable.

Please join us in extending our collective appreciation to Benjamín!
