Cuba-Russia Connection: Studies in Cultural Diplomacy

Dates: June 6 – July 19, 2020

Application deadline: March 1, 2020

Cost: $5,895

This is a unique opportunity that takes students to both Cuba and Russia. The program is structured as two courses, each addressing topics important to the understanding of international relations and diplomacy. It is multi-faceted, providing immersion in the following areas:

  • Cultural diplomacy. Forms of “soft power” including public diplomacy, cultural diplomacy, and digital diplomacy, are elusive topics and are best illustrated by case studies. Russia and Cuba are rich with such examples in both historic and contemporary contexts.
  • History, economy, politics, foreign policy. Students will undertake an intensive study of these countries through lectures and related activities.
  • Culture. Students engage in a rich and engaging program that promotes interaction with Cubans and Russians.

Russia and Cuba are both very prominent topics in US foreign policy. At the same time, the need for cultural diplomacy has never been greater.

This program is highly relevant for any student of international relations, political science, Russian studies, Latin-American (or Cuban) studies, history, and/or diplomacy. Students will earn credit for two 3-credit courses, with transcripts issued by Stetson University (Florida).
