Why we cannot ignore the growing importance of Latin America
The growing relevance of Latin America in the world scenario is beyond dispute. Changes in trade and diplomatic agreements with emerging superpowers in Asia and other parts of the globe, as well as anti-immigration policies, particularly those of the US toward its Southern Latin American neighbor Mexico, are redesigning Latin America’s role in the international system.Furthermore, the transnational character of Latin America cannot be ignored. An unprecedented number of Latin Americans in the US and other world scenarios are influencing the cultures,economies, and politics of these immigrants’ native and receiving countries. As the character of Latin America shift, we need new ways to conceptualize, study, and evaluate the processes that cross, intersect, and challenge national borders within and outside this region. Only an interdisciplinary, collective, and contextualized approach of Latin America will help us understand the global significance of the region at large. Help us train future Latin Americanists with a thirst for a deep understanding of Latin America and a commitment to social justice and global citizenship.

Who we are
We are a vibrant community at Boston University that has engaged students and faculty across multiple disciplines in the study of Latin America, and has promoted a forum for cultural exchange between the BU community and other universities and organizations around the world for many years. We are affiliated to an interdisciplinary program, housed at the Pardee School of Global Studies. The Latin American Studies Program (LASP) is currently configured as a non-departmental academic unit that administers a major, a minor, and a track (concentration) within the major of International Relations (IR) as well as a master’s degree (LASMA). The LASP also provides annual curriculum options for an average of 450 students who aspire to learn more about Latin America.
Our Fundraising Initiative
In order to transform the Program into a Center for the study of Latin America and Latin Americans across Boston University, the core faculty of the program has begun a fund, which currently has $6650.00
Our Goals
Our goal is to consolidate the intellectual initiatives that have already taken shape within the LASP; expand the visibility of Latin American Studies at BU at the national and international level; and contribute to BU’s general education’s mission by enhancing “Diversity, Civic Engagement, Global Citizenship and Cultural Literacy.”
Our main objectives are the following:
Consolidate existing academic programs and develop new ones; Develop more personalized pedagogies;
Support interdisciplinary teaching and foster innovative research;
Contribute to the “One BU” approach in connecting the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences of the College of Arts and Sciences with medical science and public health studies of the Medical Campus through the integrative activities;
Seek relevant support for faculty research and teaching (such as grants research assistantships, and fellowships);
Enhance the quantity and quality of students by providing more financial aid options;
Integrate a program of distinguished visiting faculty (intellectuals, artists and/or public figures) into the curriculum of our programs and degrees;
Maintain linkages with other universities, centers, institutions, organizations around the world through internship opportunities and other initiatives such as the Visiting Scholars program;
Bridge the gap between Latin American and Latino Studies through teaching initiatives, research, and outreach;
Forge vital interrelationships between Latino populations in the US, their communities of origin, and the world at large;
Develop a regional consortium for students at BU and neighboring universities to study underrepresented cultures and languages of Latin America (such as Haitian Creole, Náhuatl,Maya, or Quechua).

Steps to donate to the LASP
1/ Since the Latin American Studies Program is part of the Pardee School, the easiest route to donate is to choose the Pardee School Fund. This can be chosen either by clicking on the Pardee School Fund on the main page or directly from the Pardee School giving page:
http://www.bu.edu/campaign/support-your- school/pardee/
2/ After entering the amount of the gift, simply write in that the funds should be directed to LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES PROGRAM; the Pardee School will redirect your gift to our program. This can be done in the box marked “Other” right under where the amount is or in the “Comments” section at the bottom of the page.
Let’s take advantage of this opportunity to build financial support for the Study of Latin America beyond borders at BU.
