Alternative Spring Break 2017: Experiencing Cuba
Dear BU Student,
Thank you for your interest in the Spring Break to Cuba 2017 program offered by the African American Studies Program and the Pardee School of Global Studies at BU. The program is scheduled for March 4-11, 2017 and will be led by Professor Julie Klinger and Professor John Thornton. The topic for this year’s one-week course is International Relations.
This course is open to sophomores, juniors and seniors with an interest in any of these fields: international relations, world history, foreign policy, cultural relations, comparative politics, Latin American studies, African American studies, American studies, or African studies. The program fee is $2,200, which includes the roundtrip airfare from Boston-Havana, visa, transportation to scheduled events and lectures in Cuba, hotel (double occupancy), and some meals (breakfast, 2 lunches, 2 dinners). Please note that there is a 1 credit tuition charge of $1,537 in excess of 18 credits, but please check with the registrar about your specific situation before registering. The program fee and any additional charges, if applicable, will be charged to your student account on the BU student link. We recommend you purchase travel insurance; https://www.insuremytrip.com/ is a good place to start to compare coverage and rates.
You will need to contact Deirdre James at afamcuba@bu.edu to register for the course. A deposit of $300 is required to reserve your spot. Please note that once registered, you are responsible for all program fees and tuition costs associated with the trip and would be responsible for finding a replacement if unable to make the trip. Trip insurance is recommended in this case. Please also make sure that your passport does not expire until at least 6 months after the program travel dates. If you have any questions about this, please check in with Deirdre James. The Spring Break program to Cuba is an educational and professional learning experience. In order to be considered for enrollment, we ask that you submit a short statement (3-4 sentences) expressing why you are interested in the program and what you expect to learn. Please send this statement along with your full name and class year to afamcuba@bu.edu.
We encourage that you register as early as you can. If enrollment becomes full, we will start a wait list.
A draft itinerary and syllabus will be sent to you along with information associated with the course and travel to Cuba once you have been accepted into the course and have submitted your deposit.
