Urban H Interests: Heat, Health, Housing

Dr. Lane’s research focuses on air pollution, the built environment, urbanization, and the impacts of climate change on health in local, national, and international settings. His expertise in big-data and spatial research has led to developing novel methods integrating geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing data and time-activity algorithms to improve exposure assessment and epidemiology. Dr. Lane works on several projects related to climate health data management as the Chief Data Officer at the BUSPH Center for Climate and Health. Dr. Lane is also interim director of the environmental health doctoral training program, overseeing the NIEHS T32 Training program. Principal Investigator for the Federal Aviation Administration ASCENT Project 18 Community Measurements of Aviation Emissions Contribution to Ambient Air Quality. Dr. Lane is co-lead on the data management core on the NIH-funded CAFE Climate Health Community of Practice Research Coordinating Center.

Additionally, he examines air pollution and temperature effects on cardio-metabolic health in India as a co-investigator on the Climate Health and Air (CHAIR) Pollution study. He works on additional studies examining the interactions between air pollution, climate and social stressors on the associations with adverse health outcomes such as preterm birth, low birthweight, menstrual health, PCOS, cardiovascular disease and mortality. Before this position, Dr. Lane was also awarded a Yale Climate and Energy Institute postdoctoral fellowship to examine the relationship between the built environment and urban heat island health impacts, where he collaborated with researchers to explore these associations in the United States, South Korea, and India. Dr. Lane also conducts research with the Community Assessment of Freeway Exposure and Health Study at Tufts University to examine health impacts from traffic-related ultrafine particulate matter.
