IOC Speaker Series: Senator Elizabeth Warren
On April 14, 2014, the Initiative on Cities hosted Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) for a roundtable discussion on the need for greater federal investment in health research. Senator Warren and IoC co-Director Tom Menino hosted a roundtable discussion with leading medical researchers and hospital leadership. Participants highlighted the long-term repercussions of diminished federal funding, including the dearth of young researchers being trained to spearhead breakthrough research that will yield the next advances in medical devices and drugs.
Immediately afterward, the Senator addressed students on the challenges surrounding student loans and college affordability. The issue of college affordability will play a critical role in Boston’s future and in cities throughout the world. Built on a foundation of world-class colleges and universities, Boston is known as America’s college town, welcoming 250,000 students every year.
