The Herbert and Mary Greig Scholarship honors a select number of undergraduate juniors and seniors in the College of Arts and Sciences whose studies include a significant focus on American history or culture. Students who receive the scholarship during their junior year will automatically be eligible for renewal in their senior year provided that they remain in good academic standing.
Selection is based on merit. Calculated financial eligibility will be considered when determining the amount of the award. The Greig Scholarship will be incorporated into the financial aid package of any recipient with financial aid.
Greig Scholarship Application for AY 2025-2026
Completed applications are due to the History Department by Monday, June 2nd, 2025.
Applicant Eligibility
- Full-time junior or senior in the College of Arts and Sciences during the 2025-2026 academic year.
- Completed (or plan to complete) a minimum of four courses with a significant focus on some aspect of American history or culture.
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3.
Application Requirements
- A letter of recommendation from a faculty member sent to history@bu.edu and the current Director of Undergraduate Studies (Eugenio Menegon, emenegon@bu.edu); this recommendation should address your qualities as a budding scholar in American history or culture.
- An unofficial transcript.
- A brief essay (approximately 500-700 words) about your studies in American History. You may wish to address some of the following points.
- Describe your past, current, and future plans for studying American history and culture at Boston University (and, potentially, afterwards). Include in this description a list of four courses in American history or culture that you have taken or plan to take.
- Describe the role you feel that studies in American history and culture should play in a liberal arts school such as CAS.
- How do you feel such studies will impact the rest of your life, intellectual and otherwise?
- Describe any honors, extra-curricular activities, hobbies, or skills you have been involved with, or anything else you would like to tell the committee regarding your academic excellence.
- A writing sample. Please include a sample of your best thinking on the subject of American History (broadly conceived as “some aspect of American history or culture”). This could be your best paper, a proposal for Work for Distinction, or something you undertake to write for this application. If you wish to provide another creative product indicative of your best thinking (e.g., a film) please contact Director of Undergraduate Studies Eugenio Menegon (emenegon@bu.edu) to discuss its appropriateness.
