Explores digital tools like mapping and text/data analysis to understand the past and tell compelling stories. In this hands-on class, you’ll build a website and visualizations for your online portfolio. No prior technical experience required. Effective Fall 2025, this course fulfills a single unit in each of the following BU Hub areas: Digital/Multimedia Expression, Research and Information Literacy, Social Inquiry I.
Long Description:
How do digital tools help us explore the past, understand people, and tell compelling stories? This course invites students to discover innovative ways scholars analyze evidence through mapping, databases, text analysis, social network analysis, and more. In this hands-on course, you will strengthen your digital literacy, build your own website, and develop data visualizations based on texts, networks, maps, and more. You will also evaluate a wide range of digital humanities projects and reflect on the ethical dimensions of digital research. By the end of the semester, you will have an online portfolio showcasing your new technical and analytical skills and an appreciation for how digital methods can advance humanities research and serve your future professional career, whatever the field. No prior technical experience required.
