A Statement from the Department of History
To the BU and Department of History Community:
A former BU history PhD student, Benjamin Welton, has recently been profiled in various media outlets for his alleged professions of white nationalism, writings produced by Welton under various pseudonyms. History Department faculty have been blind-sided by the recent expose, and were unaware of any of the activities that have been reported. Shortly before the expose, Welton departed from the program and is no longer enrolled at Boston University.
Welton was never the instructor of record for any class at Boston University although he was involved in classroom instruction. As a result the History Department has initiated a review of student grades to ensure that the Department’s academic, ethical, and teaching standards have not been compromised. We want to thank those courageous students who have come forward to raise their concerns and will communicate directly with those students about our investigation.
Our Department of History at Boston University wholly condemns expressions of white nationalism, racism, misogyny and any and all forms of bigotry that target women, people of color, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. There is no place for this kind of bigotry and intolerance in our department.
