PhD Candidate Patrick Browne Wins Shotwell Fellowship

Congratulations to Patrick Browne for winning the Shotwell fellowship, an award that assists History PhD students in their final year of dissertation writing. This award has been generously funded by an alumni of the History PhD program.

Tentatively titled “The Ordeal of Homecoming: Northern Civilians and Returning Union Veterans of the Civil War,” Patrick’s work explores the response on the part of northern soldiers’ relief organizations to the problem of the recently discharged Union veteran, the challenge of getting him home, and the unprecedented efforts to aid him in his immediate transition from the military to civilian society.
