Xiaozhou Ruan is an assistant professor of earth and environment in the College of Arts and Sciences at Boston University and is a junior faculty fellow of the Hariri Institute.

Ryan is a physical oceanographer and his research interests center on a wide range of dynamic processes in the ocean. He uses a combination of theoretical fluid dynamics, numerical modeling, and analysis of observations to investigate oceanic motions from scales of centimeters to thousands of kilometers. Xiaozhou is particularly interested in understanding how small-scale ocean turbulence affects large-scale coastal and global ocean circulation. Xiaozhou received his PhD in Environmental Science and Engineering from the California Institute of Technology in 2019. Before joining BU, he was a postdoctoral associate in the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences at MIT.

Research InterestsGeophysical fluid dynamics, Boundary layer turbulence, Ocean mixing, Southern Ocean and Abyssal Ocean Circulation
