Professor Soumendra Basu’s present and past research includes: i) solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), ii) optical fibers for mid-IR transmission, iii) wide bandgap materials for solid state lighting, iv) thermal barrier and environmental barrier coatings for gas turbine applications, and v) nanostructures in rare-earth doped silicon, vi) effects of interfacial structure and segregation on interfacial strength, vii) high Tc superconducting materials, and viii) high temperature oxidation and corrosion of alloys. Recent research in SOFCs include enhancing catalytic activity of anodes by infiltration, understanding and mitigating surface instabilities in cathode materials, understanding and mitigating cathode poisoning using coatings on interconnections, and quantitative characterization of porous 3-D electrode microstructures. Recent research in optical fibers include understanding processing/structure/property relationships in germanium-, silicon- and germanium/silicon alloy-core optical fibers fabricated by the molten core method.
