Writing & Communication Resources
Several offices at BU provide writing and communication support for doctoral students across the disciplines.
Professional Development & Postdoctoral Affairs provides writing support for doctoral students in a variety of ways. In addition to the badges on Communication Skills available via PhD Progression, PDPA also runs a weekly Dissertation Writing Group, a bi-annual Dissertation Writing Institute, and an Accountability Partners Program.
Writing and Communications Workshops
Professional Development & Postdoctoral Affairs offers a variety of workshops for current doctoral students on writing and communications strategies. They offer sessions focused on various aspects of writing dissertations, articles, grants and fellowships, professional communications, and job applications as well as presentation methods, public speaking, and communication methods. BU Public Relations & Social Media
BU Public Relations/Social Media has a huge number of resources on its website regarding best practices in promoting your research and engaging target audiences. Learn about creating a pitch for investors or writing an op-ed from their Strategic Communications Workshops. Discover how to develop a social media strategy or do a social media takeover from their helpful guides.
Toastmasters
Toastmasters is a nonprofit organization devoted to helping people improve their public speaking skills. Two Toastmasters groups hold meetings at Boston University. The Geek Speak Toastmasters Club meets on the Charles River Campus, and the BUMC Toastmasters Club meets on the Medical Campus.
National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity
Boston University currently has an institutional membership to the NCFDD, which provides resources focused on time management, developing a daily writing practice, overcoming writing resistance, and more.
