Kasey Shultz, CAS, Zanzibar
“As beautiful as the Zanzibar harbor was during the day, it could never compare to how it looked as the sun sank into the Indian Ocean. I loved watching how the colors changed, shadows waxing and waning, every second bringing a new perspective to the calm water below the wooden dhows. I loved thinking about how many other sunsets dhows like these had witnessed, stretching back centuries. And yet each and every sunset cast different shadows, painted the sky different shades of fire, and shone down on everyone from Omani Sultans to wandering vagabonds. On the one hand it made me feel insignificant, one tiny drop in an ocean of history, but I also felt united with a long line of other travelers who had all watched the same sun sink down behind wooden dhows, realizing that there was so much more to the world than the tiny shred of light before our eyes.”
