Overview: The Mekong Delta project was originally supported by the Unocal Foundation with continued funding by the Chevron Foundation. The goal of the project was to retrain general physicians in Can Tho and the Mekong Delta as Family Medicine specialists through a part-time retraining program.
Accomplishments:
- 75 Family Physicians were trained and are now practicing in the region
- 11 Provinces in the Mekong Delta are now served by family medicine-trained physicians
- Can Tho’s Family Medicine Center has 6 full–time professional staff
- 2 Can Tho University staff obtained Master’s degrees in Family Medicine from the University of Philippines and now serve as lead educators
- Essential medical supplies and teaching resources were supplied to the Family Medicine Center in Can Tho, and facilities were renovated
