Masters International Talk – Casey Leon RPCV 10/21

October 13th, 2016 in GH Events

Friday October 21, 1:00-2:00pm CT305

Please come and meet Casey León, an RPCV who currently works at Health Care for the Homeless, in order to learn about her Peace Corps experience as a community health volunteer and how it has influenced her career path.

Casey León served in Puyo, Ecuador – a provincial capital in the Amazonian region of the country. Her main project was collaborating with the Ministry of Public Health and Department of Intercultural Health to improve medical services for indigenous patients in the provincial hospital. Her time spent with indigenous communities included flying in tiny planes deep into the jungle to land on machete-maintained airstrips, frequent spiritual cleansing by shamans, learning to shoot a blow gun, and spending a day playing with a baby monkey only to realize that dinner was momma monkey soup.

Other projects she worked on included conducting an analysis and intervention of the nutritional status of children within the Achuar nationality. She was also the vice president of the Gender and Development Committee, a nation-wide initiative providing scholarships, leadership camps, and training opportunities for hundreds of young underprivileged women.

Global Health Mentors/Mentees – Canadian Society for International Health

October 13th, 2016 in other

The Canadian Society for International Health (CSIH) MentorNet program is now accepting applications for 2017 global health mentors and mentees.  MentorNet is a unique program aimed at connecting Students and Young Professionals (SYPs) interested in global health with experts in the field. Mentors and SYPs are free to establish a program that suits them best and their program liaison will facilitate the experience. On average SYP-Mentor pairs meet monthly through Skype or in person, using the educational modules provided by their program liaison as a starting-off point or navigating their mentorship relationship on their own, the program is very flexible! We as committee members deem a successful mentorship experience as one that benefits both the Mentor and the SYP through exploring new material, obtaining a new point of view on a topic, and by giving/receiving career and life advice in global health. Many of our SYPs have benefitted in tangible ways from their mentorship experiences by co-authoring papers with their mentors, working for their mentors, or being introduced to new opportunities and networks through their mentors and many of our mentors have returned year after year, loving the unique view into global health they receive from someone just starting out in the field.

The deadline is October 20th, 2016 at 11:59pm.
