Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC) Bulk Purchase Initiative
In July 2024, EHS announced the opportunity for the research community to acquire a new Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC) at a discounted price through the Bulk Purchase Initiative, a collaborative effort between BU Sourcing and Procurement, BU EHS, and The Boston Consortium.
If your current BSC is 15 years old or older, please be aware that replacement parts are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain or may no longer be available. (BSC Obsolescence Notices) If you have not yet taken advantage of this offer, there is still time! Due to the overwhelming response, manufacturers have extended their discounted pricing.
For details on available models, pricing, and the final deadlines for these offers, please review Boston Consortium BSC Pricing 2025 PDF.
As a reminder, please ensure the following steps are completed before the delivery of your new BSC:
- Decontamination and Removal of Existing BSC: Your current BSC must be decontaminated, disconnected, and removed. To schedule decontamination, please contact Jim Denoncourt at Technical Safety Services via email @ jim.denoncourt@techsafety.com or call 617-999-7762. For disconnection, submit an Facilities Service Request (FSR) to Facilities and coordinate with Trucking for removal.
- Connecting the New BSC: When the new BSC is in place, submit a FSR to have it connected to building infrastructure (if necessary). Once it has been connected, contact EHS Program Manager Connie Gath to schedule certification of the new BSC.
Space Considerations: Ensure that the new BSC will fit in your designated space, especially regarding the unit’s height and the ceiling clearance. Newer BSC models require a minimum clearance of six to nine inches.
If you have any questions or need further assistance, please feel free to contact Program Manager Connie Gath.
