GSDM Brings Oral Health Education to Pine Manor College
Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) Division of Community Health Programs (CHP) Oral Health Promotion Director Kathy Lituri and a team of volunteers attended the Pine Manor College Health Fair on September 23. Volunteers provided free dental screenings and oral health education on topics college students may be concerned with such as oral piercing, teeth whitening, the effects of tobacco and alcohol on oral health, wisdom teeth and 3rd molars, and many more.
This was the first time GSDM has participated in a health fair at Pine Manor College. The women’s College has approximately 450 students, 70% of whom are women of color. Most of these women are the first in their families to attend college and the majority come from some of the poorest communities in Massachusetts.
"This was an excellent opportunity for GSDM to reach out to an underserved population," said Lituri. "Many of these students arrive at Pine Manor with unmet health care needs that the College does not have the resources to address. Our goal at the health fair was to screen and connect students in need with a clinic that could treat their problem early in the academic year."
Pine Manor College was also recently added to the list of colleges eligible for the Student Dental Plan, so Administrative Coordinator Diane Dougherty also attended the fair to provide information on the Plan to interested students.
GSDM student volunteers included Michael Richler DMD 11, Nisha Sundaragopal DMD 11, Firouzeh Jamshidi DMD 11, Sean O’Grady DMD 11, Joe Musselman DMD 11, Sarah Bahammam DPH 10, Eman Bakhurji DPH 10, Yaser Alsahafi DPH 10, and Maha Linjawi DPH 10. Kimyen Nguyen a student at The Forsyth Institute also participated in the event.
