First-Year Student Outreach Project

FYSOP is a week-long service program for first-year students at Boston University. Students will engage in education, service, and reflection on social justice issues as they acclimate themselves to their new home in the city of Boston.

Through opportunities based in intentional, active citizenship, education, and reflection, participants can engage in service with a local community partner while learning about Boston, its social justice issues, and how to best serve in their communities.

Student Food Rescue

Student Food Rescue gives BU Students the opportunity to learn, engage, and act towards achieving a more food just society. Volunteers go on weekly food routes where they transport donated food from grocery stores, bakeries, and farmers markets, and deliver them to our roster of community partners that include food pantries, homeless shelters, and low-income housing units.

Siblings

Siblings is a youth mentorship program that partners with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay to pair Bigs, BU college students, with Littles, youth from neighboring communities. This year, Siblings is running remotely on Zoom this semester to adhere to COVID-19 public health guidelines, but the Program Managers are excited to introduce new virtual activities for you to engage with Boston youth!

Afterschool provides youth with sufficient educational resources and tools to succeed both in and out of the classroom. We aim to provide equal access in education by connecting Boston University students with local youth through opportunities in tutoring and mentoring.

Student Studio brings art education to local schools and community centers by offering an outlet for creative minds and cultural expression. Our goals are to empower youth through art, form lasting relationships with our neighboring communities, and serve as mentors for the students we engage. Through this exposure we hope to encourage youth to explore the meanings of community and identity through creativity and imagination.

Wizards

Wizards’ mission is to provide supplementary STEM education to youth in Boston, create an environment that helps youth develop inquisitivity and a passion towards STEM through science experiments and projects. We work with after-school programs, schools & youth centers in the Greater Boston area to do science, engineering and computer science projects virtually. Additionally, this year we plan to create accessible online educational content for the Boston community.

Empowerment League

Empowerment League partners with various community organizations throughout the city of Boston to provide a range of volunteer opportunities; usually with organizations that are focused on education, immigration, healthcare, housing, criminal justice, and more! Service looks different for each partner, ranging from administrative work to tutoring, and engagement! This semester specifically, most if not all opportunities are virtual.
