Adjunct Professor
Fan is the lead for Google’s Envoy and networking protocol teams, and is an Adjunct Faculty at Boston University. His engineering organization works to advance global internet standards, ensuring that computer communications are faster, more reliable, and highly secure.
Under his leadership, the team is evolving Envoy from a traditional L4/L7 proxy into a premiere, native AI Gateway. This effort provides modern infrastructure with drop-in security and governance for autonomous AI. Through Envoy, they deliver critical features for AI frameworks and AI Agents, enabling seamless model routing, transcoding, token management, abstraction, and centrally governed connectivity.
Fan’s commitment to cutting-edge protocol engineering began during his academic career. He received his PhD in 2015 from the University of Delaware, studying under Professor Paul D. Amer in the Protocol Engineering Lab, laying a robust theoretical foundation for his modern contributions to hyperscale cloud infrastructure.
