Campus Planning & Operations (CPO) is a complex organization that takes great pride in our responsibility for Boston University’s physical environment. At one point or another, we have planned, built, repaired, maintained, cleaned, and shoveled snow from every one of the more than 300 buildings on the Charles River, Fenway, and Medical Campuses.

CPO has 900+ employees reflecting a wide range of ages, nationalities, and expertise. We are carpenters and custodians, architects, and administrators, police officers and plumbers. We are locksmiths, landscapers, electricians, and energy experts. From managers to masons, we are the backbone of Boston University, working together to create a safe, clean, and sustainable environment for the BU community.

CPO is composed of five main departments: Facilities Management & Operations, Planning, Design & ConstructionInformatics & Strategic Initiatives, Real Estate, and Public Safety.

Facilities Management & Operations provides the day-to-day maintenance services necessary to support the University’s physical operations. This department is comprised of hundreds of skilled trades workers, engineers, and custodians, who maintain and improve Boston University’s campuses to ensure a clean, attractive, safe, and sanitary environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Planning, Design & Construction is the starting point for all Boston University building development and renovation projects. The Planning team provides support in the development of long and short-term campus planning studies and initiatives that support the University’s strategic plan as well as institutional master planning in conjunction with the City of Boston Article 80 guidelines and other municipalities. The Design & Construction teams, consisting of the Annual Capital and Major Capital Project groups, provide administrative and project management services to schools, colleges, and departments related to new construction, renovations, and improvements to campus infrastructure.

Informatics & Strategic Initiatives works to facilitate and advance process improvement initiatives, systems, and communication strategies for Campus Planning & Operations. In addition, this division is responsible for the management of a comprehensive program for collecting, maintaining, analyzing, and managing the University’s space utilization information for all academic, research, and administrative units on and off-campus, that occupy over 15 million gross square feet in 370+ properties domestically and internationally.

Real Estate is responsible for property acquisition and disposition, residential leasing for graduate students, faculty, and staff apartments, as well as the management and oversight of the international real estate, real estate gift transactions, and University-owned commercial properties, including all leasing and project development.

Public Safety is comprised of the Boston University Police Department (BUPD), Boston University Medical Campus Public Safety, and Emergency Management departments. BUPD and BUMC Public Safety are actively engaged with the community, working to promote a  safe and secure campus environment in an inclusive and respectful way. The BU Emergency Management group provides, enables, promotes, and supports the Boston University community in effectively mitigating, preparing for, responding to, and recovering from emergencies.
