The Campus Framework Plan will define the parameters for future campus changes and will guide decision-making around land, space planning, facility renewal, fundraising, and daily campus activities. The Framework will be a flexible roadmap, and the planning process will empowers us to explore a range of possibilities and make the most effective use of our resources – especially space. Transparent and collaborative conversation will enable us to address challenges and build on the campuses’ strengths.

Expected to wrap up in summer 2026, this effort will involve comprehensive review and update of our long-term campus framework, and will include input from stakeholders across campus. Subject matter experts will play critical roles in shaping priorities related to specific topic areas. Hearing from many voices will ensure we remain aligned with the University’s strategic mission while meeting the evolving needs of our community.

Enhancing our built environment is essential to ensuring more consistent student experiences and achieving excellence in research, scholarship, teaching, and learning. Moreover, by better connecting our campuses to our broader sense of shared community, we can make Boston University a premier destination for students, faculty, and staff. Survey

The MyCampus Survey was a great success with almost 3,500 responses; BU students represented a large % of participants. There were a few major themes from the respondents regarding their vision for BU’s future: First, there’s a strong desire for an academically rigorous environment that also feels immersive and inspiring day to day. Second, people are looking for more shared, central spaces where the community can come together – to connect, collaborate, and build a sense of belonging. And third, there’s a need for more modern, comfortable, and adaptable spaces that can support a wide range of uses, including interdisciplinary work.

Below you can explore the results from the survey. Expand the sidebar on the left and click the layer icon to toggle between responses for different questions. Zoom in and out to see one neighborhood or all campuses in the city and region.

Status

We are currently in the second phase of the Framework, developing and testing a range of potential approaches for how our campuses could evolve over time. We refer to these as concept alternatives – different ways of organizing growth, investment, and the built environment.

Each of these concepts will be evaluated for its opportunities, challenges, and tradeoffs.

Over the course of the spring, we’ll continue engaging with stakeholders across the University to refine these ideas. By the end of the summer, we expect to complete the third and final phase, and arrive at a final framework—a flexible, long-term roadmap that will guide campus development over the next 25 years.
