Kilachand Hall Phase 2 – Construction Update – 06/09/23

General Project Information

  • Daily Work Hours from 7 am – 3 pm.
  • The Traffic Management Plan for the project has been approved by the Boston Transportation Department and is in place.
    • Relocated accessible parking spaces posted for use on 6/29 (in front of 81 and 83 Bay State Road).
    • Jersey barrier site containment in place, pedestrian walkway also in place and operational. The city sidewalk in front of Kilachand Hall is permitted to be used as part of the construction site limits.
    • A Boston police detail is on site daily assisting with traffic control and safety.
    • Bike lane is fully functional in front of Kilachand Hall.
  • BU parking spots directly behind Kilachand Hall on Back Street remain a “no parking zone”. This will continue for the project duration to maintain an adequate drive lane for local traffic on Back Street and allow the construction team to safely contain a work area north of the dormitory.
Drainage system tie-ins to building stormwater piping.

During the Weekend of June 10th

  • Consigli: Two workers on site providing site supervision.
  • Mass Acoustics: Six carpenters and four tapers putting up sheetrock at the center area of level 9 to upgrade the fire rating of the existing roof structure.
  • Cheviot Ceilings: Two carpenters will be installing the ceiling grid in the northwest curriculum area on level 9.
  • Murphy Electric: Fourteen electricians pulling fire alarm wire, installing lights on level 9, rough in on level 1, BDA wiring and completions of generator fit out, and completing fire alarm devicing in corridors on all floors.
  • Royal Steam: Ten workers putting up the insulation on level 9 and completing piping rough on level 1. This group will also focus on completing the HVAC split unit installation on level 9.
  • Titan: Four installers working on metal panels on the west and south sides of level 9.
  • Dow: Four workers continue with the drainage tie-ins to the new recharge system.
  • Safway: One hoist operator and six mechanics removing the scaffold on the north side of the building.
  • Egan Painting: Two painters continue with paint and preparation on floors 2 through 7, and the painting of soffits on level 9.
  • Cogswell: Two sprinkler fitters to demolish the standpipe in the existing stair–chase ceilings with drops on level 9.
  • Riggs: Four workers providing general cleanup on 9-B throughout the construction site.

During the Week of June 12th

  • BrandSafway to continue with scaffold removal on the north side of the building.
  • Royal Steam HVAC to continue the build out of the level 9 mechanical room, variable refrigerant flow system piping connections, and installation of wall-mounted HVAC units.
  • Royal Steam plumbers installing bathroom finishes on level 9.
  • Murphy Electric to start light fixture installation and complete the wiring of the new emergency generator and fire alarms. They will also work on fire alarm installation and begin programming. Pre-testing of the fire alarm system with Aetna will begin this week.
  • Mass Acoustics to continue with partition and soffit framing tie-ins from new construction to the existing building on all dorm room floors. They will continue work on the fire pump room shaft wall construction and sheetrock at ceilings on level 9, as well as taping and mud throughout all floors. as part of the summer painting upgrades.
  • Cheviot Ceilings to continue work on the various ceiling types on level 9.
  • Titan continues with miscellaneous detailing, tie-ins, and the installation of the metal panels at the west and south expansion locations.
  • ThyssenKrupp Elevator will have one operator on site for temporary use of the new elevators.
  • Riggs masonry continues with the closure of structural steel beams at the new stairwell.
  • Egan Paint will start priming and applying the first coat on level 9 and will continue with patching and painting in the bedrooms and hallways on floors 2 through 8.
  • LRS to start on site with a second shift installing new light fixtures throughout the building as part of BU’s energy-efficiency lighting upgrades.
  • Dow site contractors to continue with the installation of the new stormwater recharge system.
  • Consigli/Riggs team on site cleaning, site support, and supervision.
