Kilachand Hall Phase 2 – Construction Update – 05/19/23
General Project Information
- Daily Work Hours from 7 am – 3 pm.
- The Traffic Management Plan for the project has been approved by the Boston Transportation Department and is in place.
- Relocated accessible parking spaces posted for use on 6/29 (in front of 81 and 83 Bay State Road).
- Jersey barrier site containment in place, pedestrian walkway also in place and operational. The city sidewalk in front of Kilachand Hall is permitted to be used as part of the construction site limits.
- A Boston police detail is on site daily assisting with traffic control and safety.
- Bike lane is fully functional in front of Kilachand Hall.
- BU parking spots directly behind Kilachand Hall on Back Street remain a “no parking zone”. This will continue for the project duration to maintain an adequate drive lane for local traffic on Back Street and allow the construction team to safely contain a work area north of the dormitory.

During the Weekend of May 20th
- Consigli: On site for supervision. Two people will be on site Saturday and one on Sunday.
- Safway: One hoist operator on site.
- Safway: Removing scaffolding on the east side of the south face, or the west side of the northeast wing.
- TK Elevator: One person on site for inspection for temporary use.
- Riggs: Laborers on site for housekeeping and removal of the temporary ramp on level 9.
- Mass Acoustics: Eight carpenters installing sheetrock, as well as taping on levels 8 and 9, and framing/sheathing on the second rooftop skylight.
- Egan Painters: Two painters painting on levels 8 and 9.
- Murphy: 10 workers will be pulling wire in corridors, ceiling rough on 9.
- Royal Steam: Four tin knockers running overhead duct on 9.
- Royal Steam: Plumbing finishes on 9; fan coil unit installation 2-7. Six workers will be on site on Saturday and Sunday.
- JC Floors: Two workers installing tile in the 9th-floor bathrooms.
- Titan Roof: Six workers tying in skylight rubber and installing metal panels on the southwest roof if weather permits.
During the Week of May 22nd
- Monday, May 22nd is the final move-out day for students. As of Tuesday, May 23rd, the dormitory will be unoccupied.
- Olympia movers will be removing all dorm room furniture from the building to allow for the summer finish upgrades throughout.
- CPO Custodial team will be cleaning out dorm rooms throughout the building.
- Crane mobilization on Thursday and Saturday for various trades to get material to the roof.
- Royal Steam HVAC performing build out of the level 9 mechanical room, variable refrigerant flow system piping, and ductwork on level 9.
- Murphy Electric will continue with rough work on levels 8 and 9, overhead rough on level 9, build out of electrical panels in level 9 mechanical room, and build out of the new emergency generator.
- Mass Acoustics to continue with soffit and ceiling framing as well as sheetrock on level 9. Level 1 stair core shaft wall installation will also get underway, as well as cleanup work on level 8, mostly sheetrock and taping.
- Cheviot Ceilings will continue work on the various ceiling types on level 9.
- Titan continues with roof installation and miscellaneous detailing and tie-ins. They will also install metal panels at the center roof face.
- ThyssenKrupp Elevator will have one operator on site for temporary use of new elevators.
- JC Floor and Tile will be finishing up the added tile scope in the renovated suite bathrooms and continuing with the level 9 tile installation.
- Riggs masonry to start on stairwell parging.
- Egan Painters are continuing work with concrete blocks and railings in the stairwell, as well as paint on levels 8 and 9.
- SOS will be on site to start to remove the temporary construction barriers on levels 1-7 as well as carpet demolition in the dormitory rooms starting on level 7.
- Consigli/Riggs team on site for cleaning, site support, and supervision.
